Andrew Denton - CEO, Outdoor Industries Association UK
Andrew Denton has been working in the outdoors since 1984, starting his career in outdoor education and then moving on to a series of senior management and ownership roles in businesses such as Rohan, Mountain Equipment, Sprayway, the Outdoor Sports Company and now climbing walls.
He is best known as the modern founder and co-owner of the international technical brand Mountain Equipment where he worked for 17 years and then sold in 2003. Today he is the CEO of the Outdoor Industries Association, the body that represents the UK Outdoor Recreation Industries to government and across the world. He also works as an independent consultant in Outdoor Recreation as well as owning several companies in the Outdoor sector.
Andrew sits on many outdoor recreation committees, both government and NGO, working with DCMS, PHE, Sport England, National Trust, SRA, UK Active and many others. He is an accomplished mountaineer, mountain biker, ski mountaineer and GB Ironman triathlete with first ascents in Patagonia & Antarctica and a broad background of outdoor adventures across the world.
Andrew will give a short presentation on ‘The Journey to Impacting Outdoor Participation’. He will speak about the overwhelming urgency to get Europe active, how the goals of the industry can be aligned with the health and social goals of the political community, and ultimately, using the UK as an example, show the political path to success and what a future could look like. This presentation will be closely linked to the EOG ‘itsgreatoutthere’ campaign.
